Sound preference changes to unconnected external headphones on reboot

Every time I restart my 2018 MacMini running Mojave, the sound preferences change from the built-in MacMini Speakers to the headphone port, although nothing is connected to it. I do use headphones once in a while, but this happens every time I restart. How can this be fixed

Sounds like the micro switch inside of the headphone port is stuck in output. Plug and unplug a set of headphones or buds a couple of time and see if you can get the sound to return to Internal Speakers when they are unplugged. If not, then the iMac's headphone output port needs to be serviced.

Thanks for pointing me to the solution. Looking at the Mini found there was a cord plugged into the headphone port, which I traced back to my Asus monitor, but where it was plugged into something other than the speaker port. Plugging the cable into the right port on my monitor brought the sound to my monitor, which is the best spot. I wish the ports on the Mini and the monitor had labels I could read!
