Apple ID on iPhone and ipad

I have iPad and now have iPhone. Would like to sync calendars. I have different Apple ids on the two devices. I tried to changeable I’d on the iPhone to mag h iPad but it says the Apple ID is already I use. How Cani get both devices to use same Apple ID? Is it necessary I ordr to sync the devices?
