I have an Apple TV HD and I recently purchased a 4K TV.
I assume my current device will not support 4K content, however, I have the Apple TV app on my Samsung Smart TV.
Available 4K content on the app will playback as 4K, correct? Are there additional benefits of getting the Apple TV 4K hardware even if I already have the app on a 4K TV?
The Apple TV app on smart TVs is just that, the app for iTunes movies and TV shows, Apple TV+, and other Apple TV app in-app (premium) Channels.
All the other functionality of the Apple TV box is not included when you have just the Apple TV app on a non-Apple device. No tvOS App Store with all its apps, no support for third party apps in the TV app, no Home Sharing, no iTunes Extras, no Apple Music, no iCloud Photos, no other system wide iCloud services, no portability to a different TV set, etc.
