Duplicate movies in TV app library

I am running the new TV app on a Mac Mini, which serves movies and TV shows to my Apple TVs.

This morning, I discovered that I couldn't play any of my downloaded TV shows. That's another thread...

But then, I discovered that ninety (90) of my iTunes purchased and downloaded movies have been duplicated in my library.

This has happened before, with new releases. Sometimes Apple will push an update out for a new release to correct something. In that case, I just remove the download and re-download the new one.

Not this time: these are actual DUPLICATES. 90 of them.

So, I deleted one download and then "Delete from library..." which prompted me to Hide the movie. I did that and, guess what? The duplicate vanished, as well. But the new one is downloading. We will see if it appears in my library when this is finished.

Unbelievable ...

I called Apple Support. They escalated me to a supervisor. She said something about a "known issue", but that I had to update my Mac Mini first to 10.15.3 (I was on 10.15.2).

Then she said she would call me back in 15 minutes, when the update would be completed; an hour later, still no call back.

So, I tried some experiments - in the process, I did something so that I can no longer download 2 of my movies (Aquaman and American Sniper). I will worry about those later...

I created a Smart Playlist to show only my purchased movies and then sorted by name. I can now see the 90 duplicate movies.

It turns out that to remove the duplicates (which are showing as being available for download from the cloud), I first select the new version and then Delete from Library. On the following dialog, click on Hide Movie. Finally, go back into the Account settings, Manage Hidden Purchases and UNHIDE the title.

After restarting the TV app, I now have only one copy of the title.

I spoke too soon... the next day, many of the duplicates returned.

So, I deleted/hid these movies and I guess I can only watch the downloaded versions. I will have to check to see if I can still "see" the streaming version and if I can still "play" the downloaded versions.

No more purchasing movies from Apple ... this is ridiculous.

It's worse than I thought... all of my purchased and downloaded movies "Cannot Be Played on This Apple TV".

So, all of my purchased and downloaded movies are invalid. And, I cannot re-download movies I own to my library because of the err -11800 problem.

I found another (now locked) post that described the download issue: you have to disable both HDR and multi-channel audio to be able to download to an external HDD. But then, why would I want to stream that content to my Apple TV?

I guess the answer is: no more downloaded content from Apple. That by itself would be OK, except that I have a bunch of playlists from my movies (e.g. Marvel Universe in released order). But guess what? You cannot make playlists from iCloud purchased movies.

I knew this day was coming... Catalina destroyed my music collection when iTunes was replaced by Music and I ended up with hundreds of duplicate tracks. Now, the same has happened with Movies.

I have 297 purchased Apple movies and a Netflix DVD/BD subscription. Let the games begin.
