Transfer photos from mac mini to ipad

What is needed to get photos from internal drive to iPad and not go through iTunes? Also, get photos from iPad to internal drive.

I'm an old guy and sometimes technically challenged...

My 'external drive' is inside my mac mini. Same cable? I currently use a USB 2 to connect the two...

How is your external drive inside your Mac? Wouldn't that make it an internal drive?
