Installing windows 10 without bootcamp.

Hi.

I've got a 2012 mbp. There's a 500gb ssd for the osx os that I installed instead 9f the dvd drive.

There's also an empty second internal 1tb ssd.

I've been trying to install Windows 10.

The installation hangs when trying to use bootcamp.

I've managed to get a working version of win 10 installed on a USB stick using vmware.

The problem I'm having is getting a bootabke installation of Windows on the empty internal ssd.

I bought software to try to clone the system from the USB stick to the spare internal ssd using a migrate system tool.

It appears to work until I try to boot into Windows on the 1tb internal drive.

I then get a message saying insert boot disk and press any key.

Any ideas on how I could get this to work would be hugely appreciated.

Best

Paul

I accidently posted this question twice.

Mods delete one if necessary.

I got a response in the other thread.

I was trying to install Windows onto a second internal ssd which is on the optical drive bay.

Im told that I need to disconnect the ssd in the opti bay as windows will only install onto the main drive bay.

Then I can reconnect my second drive.

I have a working win 10 on a flash drive already.

I created it using vmware and a wintousb software.

Thanks for the help.

Hi there,

If you have only tried using bootcamp once, I'd try again to see if the installation still hangs. If bootcamp still doesn't work, then I'd create a bootable flash drive with Windows 10 on it. You can then boot off that flash drive to install Windows 10 onto whichever ssd you prefer. Installing Windows on a new ssd should be pretty universal, here's one tutorial that you could check out if you need: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rl6SeLSyztw.

**Once you get Windows 10 installed, I would highly recommend having a USB flash drive with the necessary drivers for your Mac to install (so that things like your internet, keyboard and trackpad work properly). You download these drivers from the Bootcamp Assistant in macOS.
