Static screen when trying to login to Macbook

I’ve got a 2016 MacBook running MacOs10.15- haven’t used my computer while I’ve been on holiday for about a month and now when I try and login I get a static screen after I enter my password! Now the computer is stuck in a loop of the black screen with Apple logo, then the static, then black screen with logo again. Am I out of luck here?

at minimum, try zapping the pram.

Also, if it's hot, let it cool, then try a safe boot...

Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode?
