Activation pending and iTunes error

My iPad is saying it cannot be activated due to an activation server being temporarily unavailable, and I should try connecting my iPad to iTunes. I don't know how it got to this point but I do not know if iTunes was set up and if so I do not know the password or email to it. Is there any possibility I could just start it off as a new iPad even if that means deleting all the data from it?
