Is there anyway to make it so the one screen does not go into full-screen view when you exit split view?

Hello, kmoo1723.

As I understand it, there is not a way to prevent the second app from moving into full screen view when you exit the first. However there is a really simple workaround involving two keystrokes.

Once you have exited the first app from the split screen view, press (together) Command-Tab (⌘Tab) and release, then press Escape.

This keystroke combination takes advantage of the Finder's application switcher shortcut to bring focus to the next app –usually the other app you just left in full screen view– and then the escape key to exit that app from full screen view. Both apps are now separated again and on the desktop.

  • ...Command-Tab: Switch to the next most recently used app among your open apps.

edit– If you have invoked a third app (or more) while working with the two apps sharing the split screen, the ⌘Tab shortcut may have to be typed more than once to return to the second app still in full screen mode – ⌘Tab-Tab for example.
