Bluetooth connection to JBL speaker not working

When I connect to my older JBL bluetooth speaker, it will never work with my MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017). This has been persistent throughout several updates and I can't seem to figure out the problem. After reading various other threads and trying the following, it still won't work:

Making sure the output is correct in the sound settings

Relaunching app (Spotify) and trying other sound sources (youtube)

Restarting computer and speaker

Playing sound from different devices (worked fine with iPhone/iPad)

Resetting the Bluetooth Module

Resetting the SMC and PRAM

Another sign it isn't connected is that the speaker does not display the correct time after being reset, which it normally does as soon as a bluetooth connection is made. This tells me that there is most likely no information being transmitted between the Mac and the speaker. Unfortunately I don't have any other bluetooth devices to test with, but I haven't had this problem with other speakers and my Mac in the past. Any ideas?

Thanks for your time,

Martin

Hey there Martin,

From what I gather you’re having some issues pairing your Bluetooth speaker and your MacBook Pro. Is that right? I use my Bluetooth accessories with my Mac all the time, so I’m sure you’re eager to help get this issue resolved.

Just to confirm, have you ever been able to connect with this Bluetooth speaker before?

Have you checked for any potential wireless interference? Both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi devices use the 2.4 GHz band, but many Wi-Fi devices can use the 5 GHz band instead. If your Wi-Fi router supports both bands, it might help to connect more of your Wi-Fi devices to the 5GHz band. Take a look at the resource below.

Resolve Wi-Fi and Bluetooth issues caused by wireless interference

If possible, it would also help if you manage to test the Bluetooth speaker using another Mac. You can also test the issue using another Bluetooth speaker with your Mac as well. Testing this will help you determine whether the issue is with your Mac or your Bluetooth accessory. That way, you can reach out directly to the manufacturer of the speaker, if you find out the issue is with the speaker itself.

Keep me updated.

Warm Regards.
