Some messages send as iMessage but others send as sms.

There are several answers to this question however given the simplicity of your question, I will answer in the simplest way.
- Messages sent from iPhone to iPhone (with iMessages activated on both iPhones) --->> Sent as iMessage and received as such.
- Messages sent from iPhone to iPhone (with iMessages activated only on ONE of the iPhones)-->> Sent as SMS
- Messages sent from an iPhone to a non-iPhone-->> Sent as SMS
