Ive just bought an iphone X on the internet to replace an iphone 5S.
can I simply use the sim card from the 5S in the new phone, or do I need to order a different size sim (if so, which) from my service provider.

The 5s and X take the same size SIM. Assuming the X is either unlocked or locked to the carrier you're currently using, you should just be able to pop it in the X and set it up.
