I can't see the DVD icon after press "option" key (Mac OS X v10.7 Lion)

Hi,

I have a used MacBookPro 2009 and purchased a OS X 10.7 Lion DVD to reinstall a system. After i insert the DVD into the macbook, it was suppose to show a dvd icon after i press and hold "option" key. However, i only see the recovery hard drive icon. I'm sure the DVD drive is working normally. what should i do in this case? Please advise.

Thanks.

To boot from a CD/DVD, press and hold the C key when you restart the Mac.

Are you sure the DVD is a bootable disc?

Did the disc come with instructions? (Perhaps a line of text printed directly on the disc?)

Holding the option key down while restarting will invoke the Startup Manager which will show any disks connected to the mac that can be used to boot up. It does not show DVDs.

Try Restarting and when you here the chime press and hold down the command and C keys until you see

the Apple logo, that is how you boot from a DVD.

If your friends mac even though it is running a newer OS, could have at one time been able to run El Capitan

then it should be able to do the conversion. Only macs that came with macOS Sierra or newer preinstalled will refuse the conversion.

The instruction is like:

Insert DVD, hold "option"key when you hear the power on sound and select the DVD icon. However, I didn't see the DVD icon after i insert and press the key. All i see is a harddrive icon and won't do anything after i click on the icon.

I tried the first link you mention and it doesn't work for me. I'm not the original owner of this mac and i didn't see the password section they mention after i press those two key. It just take me to the disk utility page-where i was stuck at.

My friend's mac operation system is much higher than the system for my mac. Is there any other way i can install the OS X system? my situation is like forget to backup the system and doesn't have the original apple account. I think the DVD and usb way might be my only hope to get this macbook a OS X system.

In the old days when Apple did provide their operating systems on DVD, you would restart the mac and press and hold the Command and C keys to boot from the DVD. What instructions do you have from the reseller of this bootleg DVD on how to

get Lion installed.

How to reinstall macOS from macOS Recovery - Apple Support you can follow the instructions in this guide

but given the number of people that are having problems with this recovery service it may not in fact work.

Do you have or can you borrow a mac that you know can run El Capitan, if so instead of installing Lion you can try and install

El Capitan. If so follow the instructions below, you can then use the resulting bootable USB installer to install

Mac OS X El Capitan on your MBP.

How to upgrade to OS X El Capitan – Apple Support

At Section 4 download InstallMacOSX.dmg. When that has downloaded open it and you will get InstallMacOSX.pkg.

Double-click on that and an installation window will open, this will convert InstallMacOSX.pkg to the

Install OS X El Capitan.app which will be in your Application folder.

Use the Install OS X El Capitan.app to create a new bootable USB installer, How to create a bootable installer for macOS – Apple Support

Please note you can only convert the InstallMacOSX.pkg to the Install OS X El Capitan.app on a mac that can install El Capitan.

Therefore if your mac came with macOS Sierra, macOS High Sierra, macOS Mojave or macOS Catalina pre installed you will not be able to convert the InstallMacOSX.pkg to the Install OS X El Capitan.app.
