My Airpods Pro cannot connect to my MacBook Pro

Hello,

I have had constant issues connecting to my MacBook Pro with my Airpods. My bluetooth mouse works fine, and my Airpods even started working after an update for a while. However, they have stopped working again. The Airpods connect initially, but then disconnect after 10 seconds or so. When looking at where the sound is being outputted from, it still outputs from the internal speakers. When selecting the Airpods in the sound menu, the sound icon in the menu bar searches for the airpods indefinitely.

Here is a list of the solutions I have tried:

  • Reset Bluetooth Module
  • Reset Airpods to Factory settings
  • Delete the plist file
  • Reset SMC/VRAM
  • Combo update the Mac
  • Yelling at the computer
  • More Yelling

Attached below is a log with all of the bluetooth-related errors. Let me know if anyone needs the full console log when the Airpods attempt to connect.

I had this issue. In my case, the issue began when I attempted to connect to the AirPods while a process (Chrome) was in the process of binding to the default audio devices (probably some sort of race condition). After that, the Airpods would show as connected in some views but not in others and they would not work as an audio device.

Turns out something had glitched in the bluetoothaudiod module and it was running at 100% CPU. I was able to work around the issue by running `sudo pkill -9 bluetoothaudiod`. That killed the stuck daemon, it restarted automatically, and the Airpods started working again. I probably could have restarted the computer instead.

Similar to other users, I've found that this isn't a problem with Airpods or Bluetooth. Its a problem with the audio drivers when the bluetooth device connects. I validated this by trying another set of bluetooth headphones. They couldn't connect either unless I reset/restarted audio services.

Every time I reboot my Mac, I need to restart coreaudiod and then airpods will stay connected. In a terminal window type "sudo pkill coreaudiod"

AirPods started disconnecting again. But not the continuous connect/disconnect cycle like before. This time I noticed my iPhone was stealing the connection; each time they disconnected from my MacBook, a new connection was made on the iPhone. So far, the only way around this is to forget the AirPods on my iPhone. Tried resetting Bluetooth module + reboot on the Mac but that didn't help.

I didn't think to check if any of my other iDevices were stealing the AirPods connection that last time this was happening. I assumed that only occurred with Windows PCs (my work PC always stole the AirPods connection unless I manually disconnected first).

This is fun.

Same issue on macOS 10.15.4. I've been able to narrow the cause down to Typeeto, an app that allows you use your MacBook keyboard as a bluetooth keyboard for iOS/iPadOS; However, I'm not sure what exactly Typeeto breaks. Reached out to their support and they weren't able to reproduce the issue.

Unfortunately, simply deleting Typeeto does not resolve the issue. The only way I've been able to fix this is to reformat and install macOS from scratch. Decided to try Typeeto again and sure enough, my AirPods stopped connecting (it will cycle through connecting/disconnecting indefinitely).

I came across this thread hoping for answers. Looks like its still a problem.

Thanks for the update. It's interesting that you narrowed it down to that app; I'm not using it and never have. I've probably used other apps that use/manage Bluetooth over the years though.

That said, I recently bought a 2020 Macbook Air and installed only the apps I use day-to-day (all of which are fairly mainstream). But I still had the AirPods connecting/disconnecting issue!

I successfully use a Magic Trackpad 2, Apple BT keyboard, and a third party BT keyboard with the same Mac as the AirPods, absolutely no problem. Very strange.

I am having the same problem here. AirPods Pro works fine with iPhone 8 and MacBook Air, but with Mac Mini it pairs but keeps connecting and disconnecting. Using Mac Mini with AirPods was working fine until some weeks ago. Mac Mini also presents the same connect/disconnect behaviour when connecting to any other bluetooth speaker.

I am using Mac Mini 2018, macOS Catalina 10.15.5

Could you please describe how to reset the Bluetooth module?

I have the same problem. It connects and disconnects in seconds. It sounds choppy and dissimilar tones. The Airpod fails to connect via bluetooth to the MacBook Pro. With all other devices like Iphone, Ipad connects seamlessly. I have tried all options, even buying ToothFairy, but none worked. Please help with this problem.

The MacBook Pro connects to other devices via Bluetooth without problems. The only problem is that the Airpods cannot be connected.
