macOS 10.11.6 to high sierra

Mid 2010 macbook pro, OS 10.11.6

I'd like to update to high sierra.

I have installed the Sierra OS and rebooted the PC but the update is not reflected under "about this mac"

Tried the OS update again and got a message that Sierra update was complete.

Shut down, wait, reboot, OS shows as 10.11.6

Start up disk also reflects OS X 10.11.6

I've tried to go straight to High Sierra with no success using a combo update.

What have I missed?

Why does the intermediate sierra OS update not reflect in "about this mac"?

Why am I not able to make the leap from capitan to high sierra?

Hello jsemi,


Combo update is only for if you have 10.13.0 through 10.13.5 installed already... which are not available for download anymore, just the full 10.13.6 installer.


Do you have any Anti-Virus or Cleaner Apps installed?


Disconnect any external drives you have & try installing it in Safe Mode...


Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode?

Upon your advice I performed the update in safe mode.

Result, unsuccessful.

To be clear this is a Mid 2010 macbook pro running 10.11.6

The high sierra 10.13.6 update did not work in standard or safe mode.

A message stating that 10.13 is required for 10.13.6 to run.

The sierra update did not work in standard or safe mode to the extent that the installation ran but 10.11.6 still shows as current OS. Running the update again states the update was successful.


Perhaps I have run the incorrect update for sierra.

Would someone provide the correct down load links?
