Is there a way to mute / disable the startup sound on iMac? I tried different ways using terminal but none seemed to be working ; sudo nvram SystemAudioVolume=%80

You can also use the "Mute" key before you shutdown or restart. As far as the startup chime being a diagnostic tool, Apple has removed it from all new Macs.

(In the above command, that’s a single space character between the quotation marks.)
Many websites say you can silence your Mac at boot by pressing the “Mute” button on your keyboard and holding it down right after you boot the Mac up. However, this didn’t work for us. Perhaps it only works on older versions of Mac OS X, or with older Mac hardware.
FWIW, Onyx (free) has a parameter setting to mute the startup chime which seems to work.
The startup sound is a diagnostic and shouldn't be muted. However if you simply do not want to hear it, then put the display to sleep and don't turn off the computer.
Turn down or mute the internal speaker volume and then plug a set of buds, headphones or external speakers into the headphone jack.
