how to disable startup sound on imac

Is there a way to mute / disable the startup sound on iMac? I tried different ways using terminal but none seemed to be working ; sudo nvram SystemAudioVolume=%80

sudo nvram SystemAudioVolume=%01

sudo nvram SystemAudioVolume=%00 etc.

You can also use the "Mute" key before you shutdown or restart. As far as the startup chime being a diagnostic tool, Apple has removed it from all new Macs.

"Mac models from early 2016 and earlier make a chime sound when they start up. Mac models from late 2016 and newer don't have a startup chime, with the exception of MacBook Air (13-inch, 2017)."

sudo nvram SystemAudioVolume=" "

(In the above command, that’s a single space character between the quotation marks.)

Many websites say you can silence your Mac at boot by pressing the “Mute” button on your keyboard and holding it down right after you boot the Mac up. However, this didn’t work for us. Perhaps it only works on older versions of Mac OS X, or with older Mac hardware.
