Incompatibility is the Issue Here:
Your printer is not working, because it is incompatible with your macOS.

How to get this to work on your Mac::
Run this off of a Windows Virtual Machine:
If you have a desire to use this printer on your Mac, you could run Windows as a Virtual Machine, and then run the printer off of that, while your macOS is running itself in the background.
Virtual Machine Programs are VMWare Fusion and Parallels. Basically, it is Windows-in-a-window. Use Windows XP and Up.

What is so difficult about you telling us exactly what OS your mac is on, click on the Apple top left of your screen and click on About This Mac.
If your mac is on Mac OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 then you should be able to install the drivers from here,
https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/support/details/printers/inkjet-single-function/ip-series/ip8720?tab=drivers_downloads again make sure the operating system selector is set for El Capitan. also see what is available from the Software section.
Make sure the printer is on, connect it to your mac. Open System Preferences> Printers & Scanners. If the printer is not listed in
the left hand column then click on the + button to see if you can add it.
If you need to install the drivers for this printer then you can get them from this link,
https://www.canon.co.uk/support/consumer_products/products/printers/inkjet/pixma_ip_series/pixma_ip8750.html?type=drivers&language=en&os=os%20x%2010.11%20(el%20capitan) make sure the operating selector is set to El Capitan.
There should be separate drivers for the printer and the scanner so download both, scroll down the page if necessary.
Once they have been downloaded double-click to install.

To Reveal this:
I think he just made a typo when writing 10.6, she does say at one point 106 (El Capitan).
So perhaps we need a bit more clarity, they are posting on the El Capitan community after all.
