iPhone 7 text corrections

I am no longer able to correct a single letters in a word in iPhone 7 messages. It is forcing a retyping of entire word which is most annoying. How can I get back the ability to correct a single letter?

Instead of selecting the entire word, which is what happens if you tap on a word in the text, press and hold the space bar, which turns the keyboard into a touchpad, and you can move the cursor around that way to get to where you wish to make the change.
