Mail pop-up keeps asking for the Pathway.

Every few days Mail stops downloading my email. I am pretty sure that there is a problem with the port numbers but I cannot get access to Advanced settings to change them because it keeps producing a pop-up asking for the Pathway. What does that mean? I never used to get that. I have tried deleting and adding the account and it then works for a few hours.
