Can't install Xcode

I am trying to install Xcode on my computer. So I go to the App Store. Xcode is easy to find. The Information section at the bottom says its size is 7.8 GB. I have 30.95 GB of space available on my drive. But when I click the little falling cloud icon to download Xcode, I get a message that says "There is not enough disk space available to install the product."

Well, there's plenty of disk space. So what's really the problem and how do I fix it?

Macbook Air 11", mid 2012. Mojave 10.14.6.

Others have reported this problem as well, even when having over 100Gb of disk space free.

A solution seems to be (can't verify it, Xcode did install without problems on my MacBook Pro) to remove the current installation of Xcode first, then download and install the latest version of Xcode.

Also, check if you have large items in your Trash. If so, and you really don't need them anymore, empty the trash to regain some disk space.
