Can you not upgrade memory on Mac book Pro

Depends on which model. Any one that is described as a "Retina" model only has memory that's permanently soldered to the logic board. It may be possible to replace (i.e. "rework") the memory with identical memory, but I don't believe a larger capacity will fit. The boards should be purposely designed for specific memory sizes. Also - Apple doesn't consider anything "under the hood" to be user or 3rd party serviceable. All other models use SODIMMs that can be replaced with higher capacity modules.
