iOS 13.3.1 battery drain

I recently updated my iOS on a one year old iPhone 8 and my battery life is draining insanely fast now. On top of that, it seems to charge very quickly too, but suspiciously quickly. I went from 11% to 65% in less than 5 minutes. I think something is very wrong here after this update and I desperately wish I could downgrade to 13.3.0.

Today's update. Basically wiped the phone and instead of restoring from a current backup I decided to just set it up as a new phone and downloaded the basic 10 apps I currently use. So far so good with battery starting the day full after charging overnight and by this afternoon with some limited use battery is still at 76%! Left the new battery in just to only change one thing at a time. Must have been a software glitch in the backup that kept burning the battery down. Still have access to current photos in Icloud and contacts came thru as well. I did loose some of my "notes" folder items so make sure you back those up before you wipe the phone. Hope this helps!!

I forgot to mention... That guy from the help line told me to download iTunes to my PC and update via cable.

He explained that when updating directly through the phone the update just overwrites old data and with some "not so great" updates that creates the problem for some. While updating through PC though (he told me it might take 30 - 60 minutes) the old software is completely deleted and replaced by a new one. There's no data loss and it's better for fixing problems created by previous update. So I'll try it that way sometime tomorrow.

i faced this issue too in iOS 13.3.1 and found a fix mentioned in another post. Steps to the fix:

  1. Disable Siri: settings -> Siri and search -> uncheck press side button for siri
  2. disable Dictation: settings -> general -> keyboards -> uncheck Enable dictation

my phone was constantly overheating and getting drained but this fix stopped it.

note: rebooting your device enables dictation by default which could cause the problem to recur. If you do reboot your device and face the same issue please disable dictation.

hope Apple releases a fix soon but this should get us by in the interim.

I posted here how my battery drained so much faster after 13.3.1. Cynically, I took the unusual step of deleting unused apps. Well much to my disbelief, my battery life got so much better.

Not that I ever used it, I think the culprit was TikTok. Not even sure why I downloaded it. Since I've gotten rid of it, battery life has been tremendously better. Not it isn't like it was when I first got my phone (iPhone 11 Pro Max) however, I don't get a battery warning now until around 11:45pm and I take it off the charger from about 7:45am.

Just thought I'd post an update.

So I let my phone discharge to about 10 % today and after that I updated to 13.4 through cable and iTunes.

After that I let the phone charge to a 100 %.

It's now over 5 hours since I took it off the charger (sent about 3 SMS, took two photos and checked Insta feed one time) and I'm at 97 % so I think that's absolutely normal for almost two year old phone. We'll see how it will behave in following days but so far it looks like the problem is solved for me *knock on wood*.

Hello MalpaG3,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities! I understand from the information you provided that you having issues with the battery after updating; I'd like to help.

While we do not provide any method of downgrading the software on your iPhone, the following support article provides some steps for checking your battery health:

iPhone Battery and Performance - Apple Support

Specifically, check out the section labeled "Battery Health"

If your maximum capacity is above 80%, this would indicate your battery is still working as expected.

Hope this helps.

Best Regards.

Option two Apple rep gave is icloud backup..... i have a 32gb SE

so .99 cent for month (50gb) backup to icloud first then set phone up as new, then use cloud to dump everything back in..... then cancel

icloud.... Better than going thru itunes and doing hours of setup. Also keychain can be set to remember all passwords on apps, i personally dont like this option but it can save alot of time... I agree

that mostt are still having problems after a reinstall but

icloud option saves alot of time

for a buck!!! good luck im still

on fence, im stuck at home due to covid/lockdown in NYC..so plugging in all day

works now but when the running starts this battery thing is going to be a drag... And i was waiting for the SE2/ iphone 9 release in March but covid delayed that..

Good luck!!!

Spoke to Apple right now, I was told that there should be an update in the next day or two, if not (since they never oficially know the exact date), I can either wait a bit longer or reinstall OS. :D

But the guy really tried to help and was really nice, he told me they know about the problem and how it presents (that display "on" while off thing) so hopefully they will solve it soon.

I agree.... 13.3.1 was almost unusable entirely with 10 to 30% drains

in minutes as well as very strange quick charges so 13.4 brougt

hope, ive done the wipe the phone clean, install fresh, and manually add apps back on, the only way to use this OS is literally

turn everything off for ex: background app refresh, email fetch, podcast updates, maps and all other gps location tools, air/car play, siri

infact everything that makes a smart phone smart....and keep

the screen brightness at a third! This OS has very strange battery

drain especially on video playing through any app ex: instagram,

youtube, weather channel ect.... like crazy drain 3 minutes can

eat 10% or better........ Facetime which has always been a heavy hitter on battery is almost unusable unless at home hooked to a cord....... I guess my SE is going to be dead right around the time

the iphone 9/SE2 release in a week or sooo..... havent we been here

before Apple with similar battery/OS software slowdowns?

I have the 11 Pro Max and my battery has been draining much faster since the update. I average 5 hours screen on time, and usually end the day with 60% - 80%, but since the update I’ve been ending it on 25%. My max capacity is still 100% so according to Apple, my battery is doing just as a brand new one would. I think it’s a software issue, more than likely will have to wait for a patch to fix it. Wallpaper bug is still here though, so god knows how long it will take to have it fixed

Mar 24, 2020 5:57 PM in response to MikkiUnchained

i am waiting for some reviews on new update.... i did let the charge die in phone completely ( interestingly when it was dead i was able to turn it back on three times and it showed 10%.... i made sure it was dead 0% ) did a full charge and i atleast for now notice a big difference and it took 2 hrs to charge... not any strange surge charging, i will uodate after a few charge cycles if this was culprit. I

am not jumping into 13.4 yet as i need this phone to be operational during covid crises even if im stuck to a cable.

Thank god a got a 10 ft one!! Good luck keep us posted on 13.4 plunge...
