Mojave on Mac Pro 5,1 diskutility hangs if a hard drive on SATA bus in Optical bay is unmounted.

Something about Optical bay SATA buss 5 or 6 the does not like a hard drive connected.

I am running into issues with the GUI Disk Utility. This is not occurring with cmd line diskutil. Everything is ok with a good disk mounted there, and Disk Utility will initially work with it after a full system reboot. But if the disk is ejected through the finder, launching the GUI version will hang "loading disks". Also hangs if the GUI is used for first aid or formatting, as first action is to unmount.

If cmd line is used to mount the drive, then GUI will run OK after forced quit & relaunch.

Hello, Cintos.

Sorry to hear that you're having this problem with your Mac Pro and Disk Utility app.

I will suggest that you restart your Mac in Safe boot. Let the machine do the housekeeping that it needs to do and let's see if that corrects the problem. Here's an Apple Support document that details the process:

Use safe mode to isolate problems with your Mac - Apple Support

Safe mode:

  • Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed
  • Loads only required kernel extensions
  • Prevents startup items and login items from opening automatically
  • Disables user-installed fonts
  • Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

Restarting in Safe mode can often eliminate a problem or help identify the cause.

You can verify that you have started in Safe mode by clicking Apple menu  > About This Mac > System Report. Then find >Software< in the left column and look at >Boot Mode: Safe vs Normal< in the right pane.

Note– starting up in Safe mode could take 10 minutes or more. Be patient.

If the problem goes away while in Safe mode, then restart your Macintosh and re-evaluate the issue.
