Hi, I want to know if an Apple Watch needs an iPhone to work for cellular +gps? I am wanting to but a watch for my daughter to track her and so she can make calls on it, but I don’t want to have to buy an iPhone for her just the watch. Please let me know thank you

An Apple Watch uses a paired iPhone as a way to reduce usage of the internal battery, and to manage the Watch.

An Apple Watch with cellular capabilities does have cellular capabilities as indicated, but the battery life is dramatically less when running separately from the iPhone.

I would not expect Watch Series 5 to last a typical day, operating isolated from the paired iPhone.

Probably ~five hours isolated and with cellular and GPS active and with fitness-tracking active during a workout, per Apple.

Maybe a bit longer than that, when isolated but when not working out.

This whole discussion reminds me of a home-release prisoner-tracking ankle bracelet, though.

An apple watch needs it's own iphone to work properly,if the watch is paired to your phone then she will get all your calls, mail and texts because the watch will be using your phone number.
