If I connect my 2010 MacBook to my external 4k display will the image that I see on the screen be less defined than a 4k image?
On Apple’s site I read that the maximum resolution supported by a mini display port is 2560x1600.

That's correct. You cannot get 4K resolution from the MacBook. However, a 4K monitor should display the MB's screen at full resolution - 2560 x 1440.
4K resolution is twice that of 1080p which is 1920 x 1080. In Displays preferences you might try changing the resolution from Default to Scaled. I do not know what the exact problem is matching the computer's video to the monitor. Perhaps you should ask a tech at your nearby Apple Store or where you bought the monitor.
But now when I set my Mac mini, which supports 4k, at 1920x1080 I can see a 4k image on my external monitor and only the UI gets bigger but the image stays 4k. Would this be the case of connecting my MacBook to the same screen?
