A Thunderbolt cable won't work, even though the plugs will fit. The mid 2010 iMac uses Mini DisplayPort.

I bought a mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort cable, logged into my MacBook and iMac, then connected them with the mDP cable.
I didn't even have have to press CMD-F2, the iMac immediately displayed the MacBook screen.
Resolution indeed is 2560 x 1440.
And the iMac also displays my Dell's screen when I use a DisplayPort to mini DispalyPort cable :-).
2560x1440. I have the 2009 27 one and do the same thing
Hi Schusz, I can't check this but I think it might be selectable in the Displays Pref Pane.
