Downloads not showing up in desktop

I have a 13 Inch MacBook Air, the 2019 model. In my default browser, google chrome, I went to settings and changed the default downloads folder to desktop so that when I download files, they go to my desktop. However, when I download files, they do not have icons on the desktop. When I clicked the finder icon on the dock and went to desktop, the file has an icon on the folder, but not on the desktop itself. As well, I need to restart my mac in order to have these icons show up, but this issue repeats itself. As well, when they do show up, the stacks do now work. I have three word documents on my desktop (I had to restart in order to get them to show up) and only two of them showed up in the stack - even though they are all the same format (and yes, my desktop stacks are sorted by kind).
