Problems updating my iPad using my computer

I don't have enough memory to update my iPad Air to 13.3.1, so I connected my iPad via USB and went into iTunes. iTunes is v 12.10.4.2 The iPad is 12.4.1

While I've tried several times re-booting both my Windows 7 PC and the iPad, after "Extracting Software", the PC gives a pop-up window "iTunes could not back up the ipad because the backup session failed. Please disconnect and reconnect the iPad and try again". As noted earlier, I've tried the disconnection and rebooting several times with the same result.

Any coaching how to get my iPad updated considering it only has 1.38G available and I'm running Windows 7 Professional, Version 6.1 (build 7601: service pack 1) and have plenty of disk?

Thank you!

You do realize that a backup will not create space on your iPad? You need to delete some pics, videos, etc to create space. If you are using iCloud, then deleting anything on your iPad will also delete it there.

As well, older iPads cannot update to iOS 13, so what exact model is yours?

With the described problem, you might need to deselect the backup option (sorry, not in front of a PC to give exact directions to the setting - but you’ll find it on the device tab that appears in iTunes). This will prevent iTunes from attempting to create a local backup.

You may instead choose to backup your iPad to iCloud (highly recommended) before proceeding with the device update.

Hi Lotus,

I went to the device tab in iTunes, but the only two options are radio buttons for backup to iCloud and a button to backup to the iPad itself. I didn't see a way to deselect both. (The other selection were grayed out.)

I simply don't have the space on either the iPad or in iCloud to do the update unless I delete all iTunes songs.

Unless I'm reading it incorrectly, the iPadOS 13.3.1 screen under the General in Settings, states I don't have enough room to install and I agree, but it then states I can delete items OR connect the iPad to a computer and use iTunes to install the update. I guess I was hoping it would allow my old operating system to be uploaded to iTunes while the new is downloaded. Once it was done and everything worked, it would delete the old within iTunes. I followed the "learn more..." link for the detailed instructions. It says to plug the device (iPad) into the computer. Locate the device on the computer within iTunes and click check for updates....and then click download and update. I followed those simple instructions but I get the "Backup Selection Failed" and the need to figure out why.

So, maybe you've got another idea or can coach me through a different set of steps...but I've tried everything a couple of times with the same bad results.

Thanks!

Hi,

I'm not sure if there is a model cutoff, but I've got a iPad Air 2 with 16G. Under the Settings section, the General/Software Update has offered this update for quite a while, so I assume 13.3.1 can go on a iPad Air 2, but this is the first time I tried it.

With that said and your statement about "you do know it won't create space?", I was simply following the instructions for trying to install an update IF you don't have space on the iDevice. Besides deleting things, it says "you can connect your iPad to a computer and use iTunes to install the update". It then offers a "Learn more..." link and that simply says connect the device to your PC, locate it within iTunes, check for update and then download/update. I did all of that. I guess my assumption (because it is clearly under the section General/Software Update/Learn More due to storage availability), I was hoping Apple had a way to upload my old operating system giving room for the new version 13.3.1.....and then delete the old so it doesn't use their space too long. Perhaps the wording is wrong or I misinterpreted it, but I can't seem to get the connected iPad and computer to play enough to allow the update....again assuming I read that section correctly.
