iPad Pro - external harddrive

Can I use an external hard drive with my iPad Pro and iPadOS 13.3.1? It doesn't seem to be working for me.

Your drive must be partitioned and formatted appropriately for compatibility with your iOS/iPadOS devices. The drive must have a single partition and formatted as FAT32, exFAT or APFS+ - recognising that your choices here will determine compatibility with other devices or computers.
