Deleting music from iPhone through iTunes without syncing

G'day all.

Looking for assistance in deleting music from my iPhone. Here is the situation and apologies for the lengthy explanation....

I have been using iTunes (or Apple Music now) and iPod's/iPhone's since their release, so I have imported music to iTunes on various PC's and transferred to various devices. Reason I mention this is I never 'sync' with my library, as my libraries are different. Correct me if I am wrong, but syncing with a library will delete the songs on the device and replace with what is in the library. I just add songs by either highlighting and dragging or highlighting and 'add to device'.

Recently I have attempted to delete some music from my iPhone because tracks from the same album appeared as 2 different albums on my iPhone (even after updating 'info'). The music has disappeared from my phone yet I am unable to add the same music again to my device. When looking through iTunes the files still appear to be there but I am unable to play them or remove them and I think this is why I am unable to add the same music to my device.

Most forums I have seen state syncing my phone with my library, but when I did this on a library with little music, I lost about 40G of music.

Any assistance is appreciated.

For reasons beyond our ken Apple have set things up so that an iPhone can only be manually managed with a single library. Attempting to make changes from another library can result in existing content being removed when you don't want it to be. If you're seeing content that appears to be on the device but won't play then see this post on erratic syncing.

Thanks for clarifying, Slimslamcman,

In order to get the content back onto your iPhone, you will need to sync a single iTunes library that contains that music with your device. If the missing content is in an iTunes library that is different than other music you have on your device, you will need to combine libraries into a single one and sync that library with your device.

To combine libraries, first create a new library: Use multiple iTunes libraries on PC - Apple Support, then import all your music into the library: Import media from a computer to iTunes on PC - Apple Support.

Cheers!

Hi, Slimslamcman,

Thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities regarding managing your music. I understand that you're trying to transfer music from your Windows PC to your iPhone without syncing directly through iTunes. I'm happy to provide you with some information.

Currently, you can move music from your computer to your iPhone one of three ways:

  1. Using the sync function within iTunes: Use iTunes to sync your iPhone, iPad, or iPod with your computer - Apple Support
  2. Becoming an Apple Music member: Join Apple Music on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, or PC - Apple Support
  3. Subscribing to iTunes Match: Subscribe to iTunes Match - Apple Support

You can only sync with one iTunes library at a time, whether you're syncing directly with method one or you're using one of the music services.

Best.

Hi Starr.C,

Thank you for your response, however it does not answer my question. I’ll summarise to hopefully make it a little easier:

I have deleted an album from my iPhone library and I am unable to re add the same album.

Looking at my phone (through music or storage) the data (album) appears to be gone, however through iTunes the album is still listed under ‘music’ and when selected it displays an exclamation mark.

How can I re add an album that was previously deleted without syncing to a library and losing a significant amount of music?

Thank you.
