It was key flicks..... went to general keyboard key flicks and sure enough, it was on so I toggled it off and voila! No more grey ghost numbers! Yeah

The issue is as I described above. Turn off key flicks.

Are you using iPad's on-screen keyboard or a physical hardware keyboard?
Are you using iPad's software on-screen keyboard or a physical hardware keyboard?
Is that on an iPad Pro? I don’t think I’ve seen the numbers row at the top of the letters keyboard. I found key flicks to be a royal pain, so I leave them off. For my iPad 6, with iOS 13, turning the option on, gives the multiple key selections per each key (Canadian keyboard).
Hardware or software keyboard. Is it a keyboard you can physically touch, disconnect, and separate from the iPad? Or is it the keyboard that appears on iPad's screen?
When I’m typing I get n7mbers 8nstead of letters, as per just now. How can i stop this from happen8ng?
