FCPX: Recreate Audio – Car Interior

Hi all.

I'd like to recreate an audio ambience of a person's voice – as though the person was inside a Car – by way of using a FCPX filter. The interior or size of the car ranges from a VW to a large car.

Would you have any recommendations of what audio filter(s) and settings?

Thank you.

There's an audio effect in the Spaces category called Space Designer. Add it to your clip, then open the effect (click the small "pad" icon on the right top corner of the effect in the Audio inspector. Navigate via the drop down menu at the top left. Go to 03 Small Spaces > 06 Indoor Spaces and in that menu, you'll find two different Car Interior effects. These are pretty decent **starting points**. Use the Dry and Rev controls (circled in green) to fine tune the ambience you're looking for. I also recommend mixing in low levels of "street sounds" and/or traffic according to your scene. You can also try using some of the other Space Designer presets to see if there's something already built that you're looking for. After you find the settings you like and you want to use the settings again... Save Preset...

In the iLife Sound effects, there is a minute and 3 second Traffic ambience track you could use as background (cut and remix).

Hope this helps.

I don't think Space Designer has changed all that much in the last 9 years. The audio plugins are arranged by "themes" like "Final Cut", "Logic" and "Mac OS" so you might have to scroll down a little until you find it. As far as I can remember, Space Designer has always been in FCPX since the beginning. The Car Interior presets should also be in there. Once you apply Space Designer to a clip, the icon you need to click to open it is located here:

That will open up the plugin window as shown in my images previously.

You may have to go to the Final Cut Pro menu and Download Additional Content... to get the Logic Pro plugins that are supposed to be available. If you want to check for the availability of the presets in question before downloading additional content, in the Finder, navigate to :

Macintosh HD > Library > Audio > Impulse Responses > Apple > 03 Small Spaces > 07 Interior Spaces

and look for 0.4s_Car Interior.SDIR and 0.06s_Inside Car.SDIR. There is also one called 0.4s_Empty Car.SDIR that might be useful (it shows up in the plugin as Inside Empty Van). (SDIR = Sound Designer Impulse Response).

You can also simply navigate to the presets via the Preset drop down menu, but you won't have access to edit any of the optional parameters (except the Dry and Rev).

Hi RealUG!

Thank you for your quick response.

Yes, I have the talent already shot (green screen), so I kinda figured that I would need to tinker around with a few room ambience comparisons, knowing that each vehicle would convey a different 'room-like' feel.

I just thought I'd make inquiries if by chance, someone has dealt with this matter and has used a specific audio filter in FCPX.

I'll give it a whirl.

Thanx again!

Hi Fox-M.

Sorry for not getting back sooner, but after looking at my audio filters in FCPX (10.4.6., )

It doesn't have the plug-in the Space Design icon as you've shown, but only the old Space Designer,

without the car interior settings.

I guess due to my old MAC – macOS High Sierra 10.13.6. (can't update the ol'work horse).

Is there a 3rd party where I could purchase it or would Apple sell the plug-in?

Baron OSX, I don’t think there’s a quick easy answer.

Maybe try one of these approaches:

1. If you already have the talent recorded but not in a car, I would separately record some inside-the-car background sound (ambiance, engine noise, traffic noise, etc) then layer it under the already recorded dialog. In short, fake it.

2. Another approach might be to record someone speaking in a car. Use that recording as a reference point. Then apply FCPX audio effects to your actual clip and experiment, with the goal being to replicate the reference sound. Trial-and-error.

The thing is, different cars have different sounds. It depends on the size of the interior, the amount of plastic that would generate echos, the amount of carpeting that would dampen the sound, the kind of engine, the road surface, etc.

Ultimately the answer depends on what you have for audio, and what you’re trying to achieve, and how accurate it has to be.

Hope this gives you some ideas.

Hi Fox_M. My apologies fro getting back late. As per usual, sidetracked with the Tsunamis of Life.

Again I wish to thank you for your help. Needless to say, you've provided the solution.

Yes, I've discovered the folder containing the SDIR files within my Library Folder. However, I do not know how to access them for FCPX. Should I copy them and drop them into a specific folder within FCPX?

This is where I'm stuck.

Sorry.

All you were doing by tracking down the .SDIR file was making sure you actually have it. If it is in that location, Sound Designer uses it (Sound Designer was originally a Logic Pro plugin effect.) Now that you know it's there, it's just a matter of finding 1) Sound Designer, and 2) the effect inside Sound Designer.

The Sound Designer effect usually resides in an Audio Category called Spaces. The Audio effects are all the way down the Effects browser, below the video effects. You should see a "divider" labelled "Audio" and if you keep going down you should find Spaces. Click on Spaces and you'll see some FCP effects, so you'll need to scroll down until you see the Logic effects. Space Designer is in the Logic section.

It's in there... !
