My phone icon is gone from the tray at the bottom and I can not find it on any screen. Tried edit home screen but did not come back

It can't be deleted. It has to be on another page and/or in a folder.

Search for it. Drag down from the middle of the screen to access the Search function, type Phone. Will show you where it went since as mentioned, it cannot be erased.
I looked for the icon in every folder on every screen. Finally powered off/on and it reappeared.

Did you try powering the iPhone off and back on? What do you mean by "I tried edit the home screen"? If you tried resetting the home screen layout, you must have done that after you took this screenshot, as that would have reset all of your screens and folders. If that reset didn't work, they you may have to restore the iOS on the phone, and then restore your latest backup.
