Is your iPhone 8 connected to the same iCloud account that you were using prior to the update? Go To Settings-->>Apple ID (Your name at the top)-->>iCloud and ensure that the Photos option is set to ON and then allow some amount of time for your iPhone to synch from iCloud.
If that does not work then do you have a backup created (prior to the update) either on iCloud or on a computer? If YES then you can restore your iPhone from that backup and get your photos back.
