I split some clips apart to take out dead space and make them a bit shorter, but when i went to re-join them, the "join clip" option is greyed out. I know you can't join different clips together, but why can't I re-join clips that were once the same clip?

You can only rejoin the clips if you haven’t done other edits in the meantime, such as trimming out dead space. If you share out the split clips that will merge the segments, and then you can import the merged segments back into iMovie. You can create an auxiliary project for the purpose.

Actually, you don’t need to rejoin the clips unless you want to. They will play as one clip in the time line.

Yes, I saw this fix on other threads, but i was hoping there was some simple settings issue I was missing. I did end up exporting the specific clips as their own project, and re-importing it. And it worked fine. (I had to join the clips in order to crop them uniformly. long story.) Thanks for submitting an answer.
But I have to ask...why doesn't apple just fix the "join clips" button so it works more liberally? The forum is littered with threads about this problem. It seems silly that this awkward workaround is the best they can do.
no, not in my case. all the clips have to be cropped, and they have to be cropped uniformly so that the image is continuous without the appearance of edits. I tried cropping each of them one at a time but could never get it perfect.
Next time I'll crop before splitting...but this time it was too late.

Yes, it would be much more convenient if "join clips" would work for any segments that needed to be joined. Maybe some future iteration will add that feature.
