i seem to have lost my "...@iCloud.com" email account. Is there a way to recreate it?

i seem to have lost my "...@iCloud.com" email account. Is there a way to recreate it? Everything was fine until just a few days ago when this problem popped up.

If I log into my iCloud account through the web browser I can go to iCloud mail and send a message out. That works fine. When I send a message to the iCloud mail address I get an error message saying "user does not exist". Same thing when I try to send a message from the mail app to my iCloud address. It appears that I have to create a new "byname@icloud.com" mail address but have thus far been unable to find out how to do that.
