My new iPhone 11 thinks my apple ID is my rescue email address

How can I fix this? The rescue email has NEVER been my Apple ID, so there’s no password associated with it. My new phone won’t let me in until I unlock this. (I set the new one up using “restore from iCloud” but my old iPhone 6 never had this problem, and my real Apple ID works fine on all my other devices)

Thanks for the suggestions, everybody! I finally talked to an Apple support person, and here's how we fixed the problem:

• Go to https://appleid.apple.com/ but don't sign in

• Type the email address being asked for by the device (in my case, my rescue email) into the sign-in box

• Click on "Forgot AppleID or password?"

• Choose to answer the security questions or have an email sent to that address with a password reset link

• Reset the password

• Use the new password to get into your device

I think what might have happened is that my rescue ID was used long ago as my AppleID, and was used to buy stuff that's still in my iTunes library.

Thank you all so much for coming here to offer help – it's great to know there's a community here when you need it!

Did you signed with the rescue mail address as an Apple ID within new iPhone and it won't get signed as you don't know the password of it .

Rescue mail address with previous Apple ID account is not to be signed in with a new device as that is linked with an old apple id account .

Perhaps the rescue mail address password ( if it is forgotten ) can be reset , it depends which mail services were used to create it with important credentials necessary when it was created .

For your new iPhone create a new mail account it could be like using gmail services see the article https://support.google.com/mail/answer/56256?hl=en

and create an Apple ID using the same gmail address and password to sign in see the article https://support.apple.com/en-in/guide/mac-help/mh35903/10.14/mac/10.14

In latest version of iPhone prefer using two factor authentication as an apple id account https://support.apple.com/en-in/HT204915

Greetings jonellepatrick,

Thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities! It looks like no one has responded to your inquiry. Here are a couple things that might help others answer your inquiry:

  • What is the exact verbiage displayed on your iPhone?
  • What steps did you take to see this message after restoring your iPhone from iCloud?

Kind regards.

Your primary Apple ID address is different than rescue mail address , if you don't know the password of rescue mail address , it is to reset on web account and not using iforgot.apple.com link , this link is for setting password for primary Apple ID address using two methods ( a ) using a rescue mail account in which link goes to the rescue mail web account , you have to open that account with its mail address and password , but you don't know the password of it , so this method fails and you can't open it without knowing correct rescue mail address password .

Second way is using correct answers for security questions , date of birth you can reset the password for primary apple address .

But in your question you have mentioned about using rescue mail address without knowing correct password of it and you are trying to sign in with a new iPhone - you should not repeat the same address if ever you reset the password of it on web account .

This will create confusions the mail address and password should be different with devices ( old iPhone or new ) and should not be mixed .

My new iPhone 11 thinks my apple ID is my rescue email address
