Does slow WiFi slow down time machine back up to external drive. Can I switch WiFi or will this interupt back up.

Depends on how is the Time Machine backup drive connected to your iMac.
If the backup drive is connected directly to your iMac using USB or Thunderbolt, then NO....
If the backup drive is connected somewhere or somehow on your Wi-Fi network, then YES...
