iMovie corrupted my video file, iPhone 11 Pro

I filmed a short video with my iPhone, then tried to edit it in iMovie. I cancelled the changes, but iMovie corrupted the file and now I don't have the original video file. I can't play the video and only get the error messages: "Unable to Play Video. An error occurred. Please try again later" / "Cannot Edit Video. There was an error loading this video".

PLEASE HELP! Is there a way to get the original video file back?

Thanks!

This is probably due to corrupted header or indices within the video file. This may happen as a result of some glitch during file processing/saving. You can try to repair the file with video recovery tool. Is it a MOV or MP4 file? Here is a guide on how to repair MOV files, but the tool also works with MP4 files. Let me know if it works for you.

Hello gis761,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities! I understand from the information you provided that you can't open a video file and it will not open; I'd like to help.

The following support article provides some troubleshooting steps to try for this behavior:

iMovie for iOS (iPhone, iPod touch): Make quick edits to clips in Photos

Specifically, check out the section labeled "Undo your edits". If you try this process, and still can't open the file, then the file is indeed corrupt and can't be used.

Hope this helps.

Best Regards.
