Do activity monitor and workout effect each other

My activity monitor works fine. If I hit the 'Workout button', it records steps, speed, altitude change, etc..

If I them open Activity Monitor on my phone, it show steps and distance. With a button to see my Workout. Are the steps separate from each other, or are they combined in the Activity Monitor?

I have also just started to use the 'Outdoor Cycle' Workout. And would expect the miles cycling to be separate from walking, however it shows ie. Max Altitude 4908, Minimum Altitude 4741, that us a difference of 167 feet. Yet the 'Elevation' gain shows only 93 feet. If I go up 50 feet of stairs, and then go back down, it should not read 0 feet.

Hello Ratz227,

After reviewing your post, it sounds like you want to know if Workout and Activity Monitor combine information like steps. The second article should help any accuracy issue with elevation.

"Workout shares information with Activity on your Apple Watch, so that your workouts count toward your activity goals."

Thanks, that did help a little. However I still saw nothing that addressed the altitude difference.

As I noted before, the altitude minimum and maximum are easily greater than what it shows for altitude gain?

If I cycle to the top of a 1,000 foot hill, then come ½ way back down, would altitude gain only show 500 feet?

If so that is incorrect data for a workout. My workout included a 1,000 foot gain.

If I cycle/walk for 5 miles over rolling hills, would I then not get credit for any altitude gain?

That would be like running a lap on a track, and it recording a distance of Zero because I am right back where I started.

In the cycling, I use outdoor, and yes it begins and ends at the same place.

I have an Apple Watch Series 3.

I walk a lot. In the last 26 months, my average per month is near 200,000 steps and 100 miles.

ie. One of my walks, it was 11,814 steps, 4.7 miles, 0 flights climbed on the Activity Tracker.

Go to Workout, and it says 3.69 miles and 202 feet elevation gain.

I can understand the miles. Maybe I walked 3.69 miles while the Workout was running.

And the extra 1.01 miles more on the Activity to add up to 4.7 total.

But if Activity Tracker is combining the 2, why does it not show the 202 feet that the Workout shows?

Hey Ratz227,

Thanks for the update.

Does the location of the workout begin and end at the same location?

Do other Workouts show a problem recording things like flights climbed?

"Cycling

Choose Indoor Cycle for activities like taking a spin class or riding a stationary bike. Choose Outdoor Cycle for riding a bicycle outside.

Depending on your Apple Watch, you might need to bring your iPhone with you to track certain metrics:

  • Speed and distance: Apple Watch Series 2 or later has built-in GPS to track these metrics and provide a map of your outdoor cycle in the workout summary on your iPhone. For Apple Watch Series 1 or earlier, bring your iPhone along to track your speed and distance.
  • Elevation: Apple Watch Series 3 or later has a built-in altimeter to track this metric. For Apple Watch Series 2 or earlier, bring your iPhone along to track your elevation."
