How can I get my iPad MF432LL/A to upgrade past 8.3? It seems to be stuck on 8.3 and will not upgrade to 9.3.6. I am even getting an error message when trying to check for a software update that says"an error occurred while checking for a software update" what can I do about this?

Are you trying to do this on the iPad, or through iTunes? I suggest you connect the device to the computer and the latest version of iTunes and attempt the update there.
I am going to add my 2 cents here.
I wouldn't waste any more time with this old iPad, any longer!
At this late date, that old iPad is soon going to be obsolete.
If you were hoping to update that iPad, to get newer third party apps from the Apple App Store, you are too late for this now!
As of the beginning of 2019 and continuing in 2020, apps for these older iPads are permanent;y being removed by third party app developers and by Apple and are going to be gone forever!
App developers and Apple are abandoning these 7, 8 and 9-year old iPads, now!
There are very few useful and popular apps that support iOS 9 and 10, now, and this inevitability will only be getting worse in 2020.
Apps are only supoorting iOS 12 and iPadOS, now.
Operating systems that these old iPads do not support.
This is now the time to seriously consider a more current and modern new or discounted, refurbished iPad from Apple or other Apple authorised resellers.
Amazon currently has, new sealed in box, Apple's base model 2019, 7th gen, 10.2 inch screen, WiFi ONLY 32 and 128 GBs iPad models selling for $249 and $329, respectively.
These 2019, 7th gen iPads have much faster processors, at least 3 times the internal RAM, iPadOS 13 support, Apple Pencil and Apple Smart keyboard cover support and have better audio speakers and built-in cameras.
A lot has happened with iPad and iOS in 7-9 years and in the past 2 to 3-1/2 years since iOS 9 and 10.
