icloud imessage retention

Scenario - iPhone with 3 years of iMessages - I turn on Messages in iCloud on iPhone. They all sync up to iCloud.

I turn on Messages in iCloud on an iPad with the same account, they now have identical content.

Both iPad and iPhone have Message History set to "forever."

If i change Message History to one year on iPhone: does it purge messages up on iCloud? Will messages older than one year will delete on iPad?

If not - if I switch back to "forever" on iPhone - are messages older than one year downloaded?

Ideally, I'd like to know that if I adjust message history on individual devices it doesn't change what's up on iCloud..

Thanks in advance--

iPhone X

Hello desktopg,

Thank you for reaching out in Apple Support Communities. I understand you'd like to gather more information about the feature of Messages in iCloud. I'll be happy to help and provide you additional information.

By using the same Apple ID account and keeping your messages set to, "Forever" on both the iPhone and iPad, your text messages are saved on both devices. Now if you change the settings on one device to "1 Year" any messages past one year will be updated across your devices.

If you prefer not losing the history of your text messages, I suggest keeping it set to "Forever" on both devices. From there, you can manually delete the the messages that you don't need. You can learn more about Messages in iCloud through these two helpful articles:

  1. Keep all your messages in iCloud

Kind regards.
