MagSafe Power Adapter 60W warranty limits?

I tried to replace my MagSafe Power Adapter 60W in-store today after it stopped working. It was within the 1-year warranty period.

I hadn’t noticed any problems earlier, but when I examined the charger more closely I saw that it the wiring had pulled apart where the cord meets the power brick.

The genius rep told me they couldn’t accept my charger under warranty since it had a frayed cable. Unless they could argue the charger had failed because of a problem that was NOT the frayed cable, they couldn’t accept it.

Has anyone else heard this? I can’t find this policy anywhere. I know the warranty doesn’t cover misuse, which is totally fair. But this charger has only endured normal use conditions and still failed within a year. Isn’t this what warranties are for?

That's pretty standard. I didn't have a problem with a frayed MagSafe adapter, but I had a Lightning cable that was intermittently working. I had covered it up with some shrink wrap just as a decorative and protective touch, along with some electrical tape as reinforcement. I brought it into an Apple Store and they said I could have it replaced if I could prove that I had any device that came with it (or just a receipt for a retail cable) within warranty, and remove the shrink wrap to show that there was no tearing or fraying of the jacket or connector. Apparently they consider that a sign of "abuse" or improper use.

So this was a replacement MagSafe adapter? I say that since any one packaged with a new Mac would have been well out of the origin warranty.

Yup, it was a replacement. I purchased it new directly from the same apple store I tried to get it replaced at. The laptop I use it with is far older than a year. I do have the original receipt for the adapter which shows a purchase date within the 1-year warranty, so I didn't expect this to be a problem.

This isn't my first MagSafe adapter. It's just my first that's failed so quickly. I'm wondering whether the quality is declining or whether I got unlucky with this particular unit. But if it's the latter, isn't that what warranties are for?
