How to blur part of a screen recording?

I have a screen recording part of which I want to blur due to my own reasons. All I am seeing when I search how to do it is about blurring faces with other programs (this is a screen recording, there's no faces involved), and tutorials for old versions of iMovie. Can anyone point me to the right direction of what I can do?

There is no feature in iMovie that provides for blurring a clip. Some users have employed the Full Focus title to impart a slight blur to a clip, by overlaying the title and then deleting the text template from the title. Otherwise, the only way that I know of to blur a clip is to create a blur clip outside of iMovie, then import it into iMovie, and then overlay the blur onto the main clip in the timeline, using the Picture in Picture feature.

It might help if you could clarify exactly what effect you want to create. Do you want to blur the entire clip temporarily? Or just a portion of the clip in a fixed place? Or create an animated blur that will follow the action, such as blurring the license plate of a moving car?

I think that the only way to block portions of a video within iMovie is to use the Picture in Picture effect to overlay a patch onto the screen. You could create a patch like this and overlay it.

It's not exactly what you want, I realize. Other than that I can't think of any other way to add a blur other than with some 3rd party app, if you can find one.
