External hard drive not showing up

Apple Genius bar recently had to wipe clean my hard drive. I reinstalled from my external hard drive using Time Machine (which is partioned between Time Machine and Super Duper).

Yesterday I tried to access Photos but got the message: Photos cannot find the System Photo Library named “Photos Library.photoslibrary”. I opened 'Other' and let the gray wheel spin overnight.

I then looked for the external hard drive in Finder and did not find it. I also tried to use Super Duper but it also could not find.

However I just was able to open Time Machine and it has been backing up.

What to do in order to re-install "Photos" and to access "Super Duper"?

What format is that Drive?

Did you do an OS upgrade lately?

EtreCheck is a simple little app to display the important details of your system configuration and allow you to copy that information to the Clipboard. It is meant to be used with Apple Support Communities to help people help you with your Mac.

Pastebin is a good place to paste the whole report...

Or use the paperclip at the bottom of a Reply to attach the full report here. :)

Workable but harder for me to work with...the Note tool on the bottom of this editor's toolbar, as shown in the image, to copy and paste the output from EtreCheck.

It seems as if I have resolved SOME of my problem.

While logged in I unplugged the EHD and plugged it into a different USB port on back of computer. In Finder/Location both Time Machine and SuperDuper appeared. Finally!

That is the normal situation. And does (thank you for asking) show up in Disk Utilities.

I have successfully run SuperDuper.

BUT…

Time Machine only has one item -- ‘Now’-- available.

And I am still unable to re-load  my "PHOTOS". I see that the internal hard drive does have the application active: photos.app But I can not find that in SuperDuper.

What next?

SuperDuper! is a cloning app, basically a cloning app, the other popular one is Carbon Copy Cloner. In short a cloning app makes an identical copy of the computers primary (normally internal) drive which can be used as a backup and in the event if the internal drive dies (they all do eventually) allows you to start and run from the clone until the internal drive is replaced.

It is a VERY VERY bad practice to put your clone and Time Machine backups on the same EHD, why because all HD's eventually die and when the EHD that holds the clone and TM backups dies you have lost ALL of your backup. Don't laugh, it happens all the time. And it usually happens at the worst possible time like when your internal drive decides to fail which leaves you completely dead with nothing to restore.

Many experienced users believe in redundant backups, using TM on one EHD and another EHD for a clone. Some backup their clone 1x per week and then keep the clone offsite in order to protect against fire or theft. Others just run both backups simultaneously which is what I (possibly foolishly) do.

I don't know if SuperDuper was a clone (nor do I understand what a clone is).

I did hold alt on startup. When I clicked on the Photo icon in the dock I got the same result as before -- the message: Photos cannot find the System Photo Library named “Photos Library.photoslibrary” and when I opened 'Other', again: the gray spinning wheel.

Opening the Time Machine icon from the dock ... I found no Photos folder. The oldest version is yesterday at noon (the re-install was the day before).

By the way, I also tried unplugging the hard drive, shutting down computer and changing the USB input jack on back of computer.

OK, I unchecked 'Put hard disks to sleep when possible' (screenshot below).

But when I put the computer to sleep, the connection to the External Hard Drive is lost when I re-awaken the computer. That never happened before.

Sometimes I only re-connect to the EHD by pulling out the USB from the back of computer and putting it back into a different port. Not acceptable!
