Activity rings are "greyed" out (not highlighted) during middle of the day

The activity rings on my apple watch series 3 Nike Edition are "greyed" out and not recording any movements. It was working for half the day (recorded 1,600 steps and 214 calories) and then abruptly turned "grey" (not recording) as shown in the attached image after about 6 hours of wearing it. I unpaired the apple watch and re-paired it. This solved the issue for a day but this happened again the next day where it "greyed" out half way through the day. I have also noticed the battery drastically draining whenever this situation happens
