New York City (NYC) - Using Apple CASH (via Wallet / Apple Pay) to Ride New York City Transit Using OMNY

Does Apple Cash work as payment method through OMNY in the New York City Transit system ( MTA )? I’ve created (and funded) an Apple Cash account in order to try out OMNY. Purpose is to be able to manage the expense and not have dozens of transactions to reconcile on my monthly bank statement. I enabled Express Transit Card and assigned my Apple Cash account as my default payment method in Wallet. I’ve explored different approaches, such as unlocking the phone, and choosing the account manually. Nothing works in order for the system to accept payment. When I change the payment method to my bank account directly, it works without issue (including a locked phone). Not sure if I’m doing something wrong or if it’s just not compatible with Apple Cash. If not, it would be a good option for those trying to manage expenses and I will share that with the MTA. I’m far from being an expert in apps and modern technology, so if anyone has tips or suggestions, I’d greatly appreciate it.
