Music keeps on playing on my phone even though it says that my AirPods are connected to my iPhone 11

I have had my airpods for a while and they haven’t given me trouble. But today they won’t play music on my airpods. The music keeps on playing on my phone even though in settings it says that my airpods are connected to my iPhone 11. I have tried all the suggestions in the comments but they still don’t work. Any other suggestions ?

Yes, it works if I restart my device, but for whatever reason it keeps recurring. And each time I must restart device to get sound to actually connect to my AirPods as well as other Bluetooth headphones. This happens on my iPad as well as my iPhone. Any solutions out there?

update: they now work. I restarted my phone and airpods. I chose the “forgot this device” button and re connected.
