AirPods are connected but not playing music

My AirPods connect to my phone, I hear the connected noise in the ear piece and then when I try to play a video from my photo album I get a message to say unable to load in higher quality. When I try to play music on Spotify it just plays through the phone and not the AirPods. I try to click to listen through AirPods in Spotify and that doesn’t work. I have restarted my iPhone and reset my AirPods and still doesn’t work. My phone is also on the latest update so not that either.
